Devices and methods are provided for collecting and handling difficult sample types. In one aspect of the present disclosure, a sample collection method is provided, the method comprising collecting asample comprising a biological or environmental substance using a swab, placing the swab with the collected sample in a sample buffer, and filtering the sample.
