Summary:The invention provides a hybrid squirrel cage/ permanent magnet motor that includes a fixed stator, an independently rotating outer rotor, and an inner rotor fixed to a motor shaft. In one embodimentthe outer rotor 20 has low inertia moment and includes angularly spaced first bars and permanent magnets located on the inner surface of the outer rotor; the inner rotor includes angularly spaced second bars and an inner magnetic flow barrier aligned with the second bars. The outer rotor is initially accelerated by cooperation of a rotating stator magnetic field with the first bars. As the outer rotor accelerates towards synchronous RPM, the permanent magnet rotating magnetic field and the second bars of the inner rotor cooperate so as to accelerate the inner rotor.
