The invention relates to an inverter and a method of operating the inverter. A method of operating a transformerless inverter having first and second half-bridges comprises operating the two half-bridges in a unipolar clocking method and determining the leakage current value of the grid frequency on the DC terminal of the inverter; the two half-bridges are arranged parallel to each other and parallel to the intermediate circuit between the DC terminals, the bridge outputs of which are respectively connected via a filter choke to the AC output connected to the grid, assigned to the respective half-bridge.
