A method is provided for operating a fuel-operated vehicle heater during a start phase of combustion operation. The vehicle heater comprises the components of a combustor area with a combustor chamber, a fuel supplying configuration assembly for supplying the fuel to the combustor area, a combustion air supplying configuration assembly which supplies combustion air to the combustor area, and at least one electrically excitable ignition mechanism. The ignition mechanism is used for igniting a fuel/air mixture which is formed in the combustion chamber, wherein the method comprises the steps of a), exciting the ignition mechanism in a pre-heating period before fuel supplying; b), in entering an ignition period, detecting the resistance of the ignition mechanism and determining a rated impedance according to the resistance of the ignition mechanism in entering the ignition period; and c), in the ignition period, operating the ignition mechanism in an impedance adjusting operation mode, namely the actual resistanc
