Summary:The invention relates to a method for producing isophorone diamine. The method is characterized in that A) isophorone nitrile is hydrogenated in an aminating manner into isophorone diamine directly in one step in the presence of ammonia, hydrogen, a hydrogenation catalyst, and optionally further additives and in the presence or absence of organic solvents; or B) isophorone nitrile is first completely or partially converted into isophorone nitrilimine in at least two or more steps, and said isophorone nitrilimine is hydrogenated in an aminating manner as a pure substance, or in mixture with other components and/or isophorone nitrile, into isophorone diamine in the presence of at least ammonia, hydrogen, and a catalyst; wherein the catalyst has the following composition after being activated in the entirety thereof, in weight percent (wt%), the fractions add up to 100 wt%, with respect to the contained metals: 55-95 wt% of cobalt, 5-45 wt% of aluminum, 0-3 wt% of chromium, 0-7 wt% of nickel; and the catalyst is
