Summary: | The object of the invention is to provide a solid catalyst that can realize high oxalic diester conversion rate and high ethylene glycol selecting rate and recovery rate and can reduce reaction selectivity of a by-product, the invention also provides a method for manufacturing ethylene glycol from the solid catalyst. When a solid catalyst that satisfies two conditions exists, a diester compound presented by the formula (1) is reacted with hydrogen. The method for manufacturing ethylene glycol comprises the steps of mixing silica and/or silica precursor in an aqueous solution containing cuprammonium complex, and obtaining the solid catalyst by roasting, wherein, the silica precursor is a silicate hydrolyzate in the existence of ammonia and / or ammonium ion; the content of iron atom and aluminum atom tested in the solid catalyst by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-AES method) are below 100 mass ppm.
