The invention provides a length determination method and device. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring a motion characteristic of an image to be coded, wherein the motion characteristic is used for representing the degree of motion change between the image to be coded and an original image of the image to be coded; and determining the length of a group of picture GOP adopted to code the image to be coded according to the motion characteristic. By adopting the above technical scheme, the problem of low coding performance caused by the fixed length of the GOP in the coding process in the related technology is solved, thereby improving the coding performance. 本发明提供了种长度确定方法及装置，所述方法包括：获取待编码图像的运动特征，其中，所述运动特征用于表征所述待编码图像和该待编码图像的原始图像之间的运动变化程度；根据所述运动特征确定所述待编码图像进行编码所采用的图像组GOP长度。采用上述技术方案，解决了相关技术中，编码过程中由于GOP长度固定而导致的编码性能不高的问题，进而提高了编码性能。
