The invention discloses an asphalt mixture taking red mud as filler and a preparation method thereof. The asphalt mixture comprises the following components in parts by weight: 30-80 parts of coarse aggregate, 20-70 parts of fine aggregate, 3-6 parts of asphalt and 3-6 parts of filler, wherein the filler is a mixture of limestone mineral powder and red mud in a weight ratio of (1-3):(1-3). The preparation method comprises the following steps: (1) drying and levigating the red mud, uniformly mixing with the limestone mineral powder according to the ratio, and preheating at 160-180 DEG C for later use; (2) after the coarse and fine aggregates are preheated at 160-180 DEG C, adding asphalt and stirring uniformly; and (3) adding the preheated filler into the mixture obtained in the step (2) and stirring uniformly.
