The invention relates to a method for operating a gesture recognition system for a motor vehicle, having the following steps: a detection unit detects a motion gesture which belongs to an operational action; the detection unit generates a motion vector representing the motion gesture; the motion vector is transmitted to a processing unit; the processing unit compares the motion vector with at least two limit curves (1, 2) which define at least three separate regions (3, 4, 5) in a section of a vector space; and, on the basis of a result of the comparison, the processing unit determines a direction of the motion gesture as horizontal if the motion vector is in a first region (4) of the three separate regions (3, 4, 5), as vertical if the motion vector is in a second region (3) of the three separate regions (3, 4, 5) and as ''non-classifiable'' if the motion vector is in a third region (5) of the three separate regions (3, 4, 5), wherein the limit curves (1, 2) are defined by functions which have a non-linear d
