The invention relates to a device (10) for producing acetylene and synthesis gas by partially oxidizing hydrocarbons by means of oxygen, which device comprises a mixing unit (12), a mixing section, and a mixing diffuser (16). The mixing unit (12) has a feed opening (18) for feeding a hydrocarbon-containing flow, a feed opening (20) for feeding an oxygen-containing flow, a swirl register, and a distributor plate (24). The distributor plate (24) is arranged between the mixing section (14) and the feed opening (18) for feeding a hydrocarbon-containing flow. The distributor plate (24) has openings (28). The swirl register (22) is arranged between the feed opening (20) for feeding an oxygen-containing flow and the mixing section (14). The mixing diffuser (16) is connected to the mixing section (14). The invention further relates to a method for producing acetylene and synthesis gas by partially oxidizing hydrocarbons by means of oxygen.
