Summary:A combined collector and distributor for a distillation column that includes a collector portion (3) connected to a distributor portion (2). The distributor portion (2) includes a channel-like distributor to distribute liquid into an underlying packing. The collector portion has spaced rows (34,36) of collection elements (38,40) that cover the open spaces (16,18) and distribution elements (10,12) of the distributor portion (2) and one or more rectangular sumps (54) into which descending liquid drains from the collection elements (38, 40). The liquid in turn drains from the rectangular sump or sumps (54) into a pre-distribution box (20) located within a header (14) of the distributor portion (2). The collection elements (38) that cover the open spaces (16,18) are set at higher positions than the collection elements (40) covering the distribution elements (10,12) to form chimneys to allow the ascending vapor to escape from the collector portion (3).
