Summary:This adaptive optics system is provided with a spatial light modulator which spatially modulates the phase of an optical image incident on a modulation surface that includes N regions arranged in two dimensions, and with a wavefront sensor which receives the optical image from the spatial light modulator after modulation and which comprises a lenslet array of N lenslets arranged two-dimensionally and corresponding to the N regions, and an optical detection element that detects the light intensity distribution including M spots formed by the lenslet array. On the basis of the wavefront shape of the optical image obtained from the light intensity distribution, this adaptive optics system compensates for wavefront distortion by controlling the phase pattern displayed by the spatial light modulator, and, during compensation of the wavefront distortion, specifies the correspondence relation between the regions of the spatial light modulator and the spots formed on the wavefront sensor.
