The invention discloses a fingerprint identification apparatus and method. The method comprises: after a fingerprint identification function of a terminal is enabled, receiving a fingerprint identification operation instruction triggered by a user; according to the fingerprint identification operation instruction, obtaining a current fingerprint identification result and information of a scene where the terminal is; according to the information of the scene where the terminal is and a preset rule, determining a current fingerprint identification matching level; and comparing the current fingerprint identification result with the current fingerprint identification matching level to determine whether fingerprint identification verification is passed or not. The fingerprint identification apparatus and method not only ensures the security but also avoids the situation that a user needs to press a fingerprint identification region for multiple times under a relatively high matching level, improves the fingerprint identification passing rate and the fingerprint identification flexibility, and meets different demands of users.
