Summary:A steering column for a motor vehicle has a steering spindle (1), which for its part has a drive shaft (2) which is mounted fixedly on a steering wheel so as to rotate with it, an output shaft (3) which is mounted rotatably in a steering gear housing (9), and a bent swivel joint (4) which is arranged between them, and has a protective cover (10) which covers the steering spindle (1) towards a footwell, does not rotate with the steering spindle (1), extends from a fastening device (17) in the region of the output shaft (3) with a protective shell (15), which is open on the side which faces away from the footwell, beyond the swivel joint (4) as far as into the region of the drive shaft (2), and which is fastened to the steering gear housing (9) by way of the fastening device (17).
