Summary:A lawn mower includes an internal combustion engine (112), an electric motor (120) configured to start the engine (112), a blade driven by the engine (112), and an assembly for stopping at least one of the blade and the engine. The assembly includes a brake mechanism (514), a release mechanism (126) movable to an engaged position to release the brake mechanism (514), an interlock (128) configured to selectively prevent the release mechanism (126) from moving to the engaged position, and an interface (122) allowing an operator to release the interlock (128) to allow the release mechanism (126) to move to the engaged position. The lawn mower further includes a switch (432) actuated by the release mechanism (126) and a control module (430) coupled to the switch (432) so that the switch provides a signal to the control module (430) when the release mechanism (126) is in the engaged position and the control module (430) turns on the electric motor (120) in response to the signal to start the engine (112).
