Summary:The invention relates to a method for observing a sample. The method includes the steps of: a) providing an object (G, V) of a substantially transparent medium, wherein the substantially transparent medium has a first refractive index (nint); the substantially transparent medium comprises a first surface (S1) that is convex, rounded, or faceted and a second substantially planar surface (S2), the first surface separates the object from a surrounding medium (MA) having a second refractive index (next) that is lower than the first index, and the sample to be observed is contained inside the object or is deposited onto the first surface; b) observing the sample through the second substantially planar surface; and c) determining the presence of a substance or an object in the sample by detecting, during the step b), a ring of light that correlates with the object.
