Summary:A time recorder (10) of the present invention is provided with a first sensor (15) for detecting a side edge portion of a time card wherein a notch has been formed in at least one corner of the lower edge thereof, a second sensor (16) for detecting the lower edge of the time card, and a card feed unit (28) for conveying the time card. When the time card is conveyed by the card feed unit (28), a pulse counter of the card feed unit (28) counts the number of pulses of a predetermined pulse signal from the time that the first sensor (15) has detected the time card to the time that the second sensor (16) has detected the time card. Then, on the basis of the number of pulses as the counting result, the front and rear of the time card are distinguished. As a result, it is possible to distinguish between the front and rear with only the first sensor (15) and the second sensor (16). Accordingly, it is possible to simplify the structure of the device.
