The invention provides a method and an electronic device for identifying information. The method includes: splitting a nondeterministic rule into at least one sub rule, wherein each sub rule is a character string, and characters in the character string is continuous and the character string contains no wildcard character; structuring a state machine for the nondeterministic rule, wherein the state machine comprises a plurality of state nodes; arranging a hit switch on one state node corresponding to a termination character of each sub rule; opening the hit switch of a current sub rule when the current sub rule is successfully matched with a virus characteristic code, and allowing sub rules after the current sub rule to continue to perform subsequent matching with the virus characteristic code; and affirming that the nondeterministic rule is successfully matched with the virus characteristic code and affirming that information containing the virus characteristic code is virus information when all the sub rules
