The filter device according to the invention, which is in particular part of a household appliance according to the invention, serves for filtering a liquid (K) and comprises: a valveless filter container (1; 1a) having an inlet (2) connected to a first outlet (3) and to a second outlet (4) without filtering, a first flow channel (SL) connected to the first outlet and comprising a blocking valve (VE2), a second flow channel (AW) connected to the second outlet and not blockable for adjusting a filter setting, wherein a first minimum flow cross section of the first outlet and/or the first flow channel is greater than a second minimal flow cross section of the second outlet and/or the second flow channel, so that the liquid can be pumped from the inlet through a filter element (6), the first outlet, and the first flow channel in a first filter setting when the blocking valve is opened, and the liquid can be pumped unfiltered from the inlet through the second outlet and the second flow channel in a second filter setting when the blocking valve is closed. The invention further relates to a corresponding method.
