Summary:The tungsten inert gas or metal inert gas welding process for austenitic steel that contains neither titanium (Ti) nor aluminum (Al) in a respective amount of greater than 1-2 wt.%, is claimed. A filler material containing Ti and/or Al is used together with a nitrogen-containing welding gas. The austenitic steel is selected from ferro nickel (Fe/Ni36-steel). The nitrogen is present in the welding gas in an amount of 5-8%. The rest of the welding gas comprises argon, helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen and/or hydrogen.
