The invention discloses a universal method for calculating the unbalanced current of a capacitor in an alternating current/direct current filter, and is applied to a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system. A universal expression for calculating the unbalanced current based on different fault types of breakdown open-circuit or short-circuit of a capacitor element in a capacitor bank in different connection forms is provided, and the unbalanced current under the fault condition of any capacitor element in a bridge wall can be calculated according to the provided expression. The invention has the advantages that: the universal method for calculating the unbalanced current based on the different fault types in the different connection forms is provided, flexibility, applicability and practicability in the calculation of the unbalanced current of the capacitor are improved, and reduction in calculation workload and improvement in calculation efficiency are assisted.
