The invention discloses micro-nano cellulose and a preparation method thereof. Cellulose is reacted with a metal salt high-boiling point alcoholic solution, thereby obtaining the micro-nano cellulose. According to the preparation method, the usage of metal salt is less, the reaction condition is mild, the cellulose degradation loss is less, the equipment corrosive substance is small, the operation is simple and the yield is high. An amorphous area of the cellulose is degraded after being treated with the metal salt alcoholic solution, the degree of polymerization of the cellulose is reduced, the degree of crystallization is greatly increased, and meanwhile, the specific surface area and the chemical activity of the cellulose are increased. The obtained micro-nano cellulose is bar-shaped, has a net structure, is excellent in mechanical strength and is beneficial to the application of the cellulose in a compound material.
