Summary:The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polymer composition comprising (a) the provision of at least one polyarylene ether (P) having predominantly terminal phenolate groups in the presence of a solvent (L), (b) the addition of at least one polyfunctional carboxylic acid and (c) the isolation of the polymer composition as a solid. The present invention also relates to polymer compositions obtainable by the process, mixtures which comprise these polyarylene ethers and the use of the polymer compositions according to the invention for toughening epoxy resins.
