The invention provides an aqueous emulsion and an aqueous paint containing the aqueous emulsion, in particular to an aqueous paint for the coating of timber, wherein the permeability and the weather resistant performance of the base material are good.The aqueous emulsion is obtained by the emulsification and polymerization of (A) polymerizable unsaturated monomers in the presence of (B) sulfonation-modified polyvinyl alcohol.The (A) polymerizable unsaturated monomers comprises (methyl) acrylic acid ester.The aqueous emulsion has a good permeability and weather resistant performance in base materials, especially in timber.The dispersion stability of the aqueous emulsion is improved in the presence of both (B) sulfonation-modified polyvinyl alcohol and (C) surfactant, so are the permeability and the weather resistant performance thereof.
