A method and apparatus (10) for forming a rubber article comprising two or more layers involving the steps of: extruding a first rubber compound (A) through a first extruder (20) and a first gear pump (25); extruding a second rubber compound (B) through a second extruder (40) and a second gear pump (42) into the first extruder (20); adjusting the ratio of the first compound (A) to the second compound (B) by adjusting the speed of the first gear pump and/or the speed of the second gear pump (42), and applying a strip of rubber formed using the first compound (A) and the second compound (B) directly onto a substrate, a tire building machine or a tire building drum to form a first layer of rubber having a first blend ratio; and adjusting the ratio of the first compound (A) to the second compound (B) by adjusting the speed of the first gear pump and/or the second gear pump (42) and applying a strip of rubber formed using the first compound (A) and the second compound (B) as a second layer of rubber having a second blend ratio, the first blend ratio and the second blend ratio being different.
