Abstract Process for industrial synthesizing of (7-methoxy-naphthalen-1-yl)-acetonitrile (I) comprises: reacting 7-methoxy-1-naphthoic acid (III) with a reducing agent to give (7-methoxy-naphthalen-1-yl)-methanol compound (IV); and reacting (IV) of which the hydroxyl group is transformed, with a cyanation reagent to obtain (I), which is isolated in solid form. An independent claim is included for a process of synthesizing agomelatin from (I), comprising subjecting (I) for reduction followed by coupling with acetic anhydride.
