Summary:In the retarding device for the delivery end of a sheet-printing machine, a suction element (7), picking up the sheet (1) at its trailing edge, is arranged on an adjustable slide for adjustment of the format, and is guided in its movement on a loop of a path which extends through a transfer position and a release position for the sheet (1) and is, in itself, closed. This suction element (7) is connected by a four-bar transmission gear to a drive member which rotates in the same manner and is likewise arranged on the slide so that the suction element (7) is accelerated to the sheet speed prior to the transfer position and, after the sheet transfer is retarded up to the release position for the sheet. A chain wheel forming the drive member on the adjustable slide and a chain wheel of the printing machine drive are directly connected to each other by a drive chain, this drive chain passing through a chain store compensating for changes in length of the drive chain without phase displacement of the chain wheels.
