Summary:The present invention relates to a valve control system for internal combustion engine with a plurality of lift modes. Specifically, the valve control system for an internal combustion engine includesa valve actuation system that actuates each of an intake valve and an exhaust valve between N open lift modes where N is an integer greater than one. A control module defines a switching window having a start time based on intake valve timing and an end time based on exhaust valve timing. The control module enables transitioning of at least one of the intake and exhaust valves between the N openlift modes based on the switching window.
