Summary:A gear, and gear drive unit, wherein the formation of oil film between tooth surfaces of gears rotating at high speed is satisfactory to thereby prevent the occurrence of pitching, abrasion and scoring and also prevent any temperature rise and wear so that the durability thereof can be enhanced. There is provided a gear having a tooth surface furnished with an indefinitely large number of dimples of minute concave configuration at random, which dimples have an average area ranging from 160 to 740 [mu]m. Accordingly, the tooth surface gains a high oil-film forming capability, so that a prolonged life duration can be ensured even under conditions such that the thickness of the oil film is extremely small in low viscosity/thin lubrication.
