Summary:Preparing polycarbonate by the melt transesterification involves, reacting a dihydroxyaryl compound with a diarylcarbonate in the presence of catalyst in a multistage process; where at least one inhibitor is added to the melt before the last reaction stage and at least one aliphatic hydroxydicarboxylic acid(s) and/or hydroxypolycarboxylic acid(s) or its derivative(s) are added in or after the last reaction stage. An independent claim is included for an optical disc having mean electric field strength of -20 to +20 kV/m and a field strength variation of less than 15 kV/m and comprising the polycarbonate containing at least one aliphatic hydroxydicarboxylic acid and/or hydroxypolycarboxylic acid or its derivative (5-500 parts per million (ppm)), and a phenolic terminal OH groups content of greater than 150 ppm.
