The invention provides a method and a switchboard for processing messages, which can judge whether the list items containing the host name carried in the name registration message are stored or not after receiving a name registration message,, if not, the list items containing the host name and the IP address carried in the name registration message are stored; if yes, the IP address carried by the name registration message is further judged whether to be the same as the IP address in the self-stored list items containing the host name; if the IP addresses are the same, then the maturing timeof the self-stored list items is renewed and the name registration message is brushed off; corresponding list items are stored in the switchboard, thus avoiding the broadcast of the name registration message in network, reducing the quantity of messages broadcasting in the network and reducing the burden of the network.
