Summary:An image forming apparatus, with a method of detecting a speed deviation pattern, includes a plurality of image bearing members bearing a pattern image including a plurality of reference images arranged on each image bearing member in a rotation direction of each image bearing member, an endless moving member receiving the pattern image, an image detecting unit detecting the plurality of reference images, a rotational angle detecting unit separately detecting each image bearing member that comes to a given rotational angle, and a controller conducting a speed deviation checking, a phase adjustment control, and a detection of the speed deviation pattern, based on a result obtained by conducting one of a quadrature detection method and a synchronous addition processing method with the detection result obtained by the rotational angle detecting unit and a result of detecting the plurality of reference images on the endless moving member.
