Summary:Al oxide carboxylate polymers with not above 2 wt.% of ester are prepd. by reacting (a) a soln. of an Al alcoholate of formula Al(OR)3 in an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, with (b) 8-22C (cyclo)aliphatic monocarboxylic acid(s) and water, dissolved in 2-5C alcohols, with removal of the alcohol formed. The soln. of the Al alcoholate is fed at a temp. 15-50 deg.C above the b.pt. of the higher-boiling of the 2 alcohols in the system (the alcohol component of the alcoholate or the solvent), into a tubular reactor with L:D ratio of 10-200; the alcoholic soln. of acid(s) and water is metered in, at a molar ratio of Al:monocarboxylic acid of at least 10:1, and of Al:water of at least 10:1. The alcohol formed is removed, the reaction mixt.is recycled into the reactor, and this is repeated until the molar ratio of monocarboxylic acid:Al has reached 0.95-1.05, and of water:Al has reached 0.9-1.0, and the prod. is finally freed from alcohol. R = 2-5C alkyl.
