Summary:1438722 Polyethylene preparation SNAMPROGETTI SpA 6 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 42069/73 Heading C3P Polyethylene having a narrow molecular weight distribution is obtained by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst constituted by (a) a vanadium compound of formula where R1 is hydrocarbyl, X is halogen, and y is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and (b) an organoaluminium compound of formula where R is hydrocarbyl, X is halogen and x is 0, 1 or 2, or such an organoaluminium compound complexed with a Lewis base. Hydrogen may be present. The products have Mw/Mn values up to 3À6 and I 21À6 /I 2À16 values up to 30. In examples polyethylene is obtained using V(NEt 2 ) 4 -EtAlCl 2 or Et 2 AlCl.
