Summary:1,274,962. Wrapping machines. FMC CORP. 29 April, 1970 [30 April, 1969], No. 20504/70. Heading B8C. A wrapping machine forms a package P (Figs. 5, 6) by longitudinally folding the edge portions of a web W on to the central portion and sealing them thereto at 26 with their free edges confronting, and by tranversely sealing the web at 30 to form two individual compartments each containing an article A. The transverse seals 30 may also be crimped at 33 and the package may have a perforated tear line T for separating the two compartments. Article feed (Figs. 1, 9).-The articles A are fed to a web former F in two parallel rows L 1 , L 2 by pushers 36 mounted on endless chains 34, the articles being supported on dead plates 40 prior to entering the web former F. Web feed.-The web W is pulled from a supply roll R by two opposed belts 29 reheated downstream of the web former F, and passes over an anvil roller 22 with which a perforator wheel 24 co-operates to form the tear line T. After folding, the web passes between upper and lower heat sealing bars S which form the seals 26, and then passes between heat sealing bars 31 carried by endless chains H to form the transverse seals 30. After sealing the web passes through a rotary crimper J to a rotary cutter K which separates formed packages from the web W. These packages then pass on to a discharge conveyer M. Web former F (Figs. 3, 9 and 13).-This comprises a pair of web forming shoes 42, 44 mounted on a mounting block 45 and having lower portions 62, 64 which progressively curve further round the articles A. A pair of studs 48 having set collars 50 pass through the mounting block 45 and support a floating web forming block 46 which has a pair of grooves 52 which are aligned with grooves 54 on the undersurface of the mounting block 45. The web W is trained under the mounting block 25 with the side portions of the web guided by wings 58, 60 on the forming shoes 42, 44. Movement of the articles A and the web W through the former F causes the side portions of the web to be folded around the articles A until the web edges 25 lie within the forming shoes 42, 44 and are supported on overlapping ledges 72, 74. A presser plate 80 rides on the folded web 80 to keept it smooth.
