The invention comprises 3- and 4-cyanocyclohexanols and their manufacture by reducing 1- cyano - 3,4 epoxycyclohexane. The cis- and trans-isomers of 1-cyano-3,4-epoxycyclohexane are separable by fractional distillation, the cisisomer, on reduction; yielding 4-cyanocyclohexanol and the trans-isomer yielding 3-cyanocyclohexanol. The reduction of the 1-cyano- 3,4-epoxycyclohexane may be effected by treatment with sodium borohydride or by hydrogenation in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst, a number of which are specified. Examples are given. 1 - Cyano - 3,4 - epoxycyclohexane is obtained by treating 1-cyano-3,4-cyclohexene with an organic hydroperoxide, suitably with t.-butylhydroperoxide.
