Summary:1,162,194. Dibenzocycloheptene derivatives. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 10 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1490/68. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of the Formula I and their acid addition and quaternary ammonium derivatives, wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, hydroxy alkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, phenyl, phenylalkyl or phenylalkenyl radical in which the phenyl nucleus is optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, amino or trifluoromethyl radicals and the piperazine nucleus is optionally substituted by one or more methyl radicals, all alkyl, alkenyl and alkynyl radicals having up to 5 carbon atoms each and their preparation by reducing a ketone of the Formula II wherein R 1 is the same as R or is a C 1-5 alkanoyl radical by any process known to reduce a ketonic group to a secondary alcohol without affecting the remainder of the molecule, followed by deacylation, where R 1 represents an alkanoyl radical or by reacting a compound of the Formula I wherein R represents a hydrogen atom with an ester of the formula R 2 X where R 2 is the same as R but is not a hydrogen atom or a phenyl radical. Dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptan-10-ones of the Formula II may be prepared by reacting a 11-X- substituted - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptan - 10 - one where X is as defined above with a 1-R 1 -substituted piperazine. Therapeutic compositions with anti-migraine, anti-serotoninic, sedative and anti-depressive properties; which may have forms suitable for oral, parenteral or topical administration, comprise compounds of the invention with a suitable carrier.
