Summary: | The invention comprises aryl substituted sulphones of formula <FORM:1102044/C2/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical which may be <FORM:1102044/C2/2> R2 is H, or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical which may be <FORM:1102044/C2/3> R3 is H or alkyl, R4 is H, alkyl or aryl, R5 is an aromatic carbocyclic residue (or, not claimed, an aromatic heterocyclic residue), R6 is H, alkyl or aryl, and R1 and R2 may be linked together either directly or via a hetero atom. The above compounds and other aryl substituted sulphones (wherein the term "aryl" includes heterocyclic groups of aromatic character) are prepared by adding aryl conjugated olefines (defined as aralkyl compounds which contain a double bond in the side chain between the a - and b -carbons) or such aryl olefines which suffer a change in the position of the double bond in an alkaline medium to provide said conjugated olefines, to sulphones that contain at least one reactive hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom a - to the sulphone group, in the presence of alkali metal alcoholates, hydrides or amides or KOH. The process is suitably conducted at temperatures between 60 DEG and 150 DEG C. |
