Summary:A method of protecting seeds from attack by birds, rodents and leporine animals comprises applying thereto a guanidine compound of the formula:- <FORM:1098687/A1-A3/1> wherein R1 to R5 are each H, a monohalophenyl radical optionally substituted by a halogen and/or a C1-4 haloalkyl radical, or a cycloalkyl radical or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical optionally substituted by an aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylmercapto, arylmercapto, carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide, hydroxyl, mercapto, cyano and/or carboxyl radical, and wherein (i) only one of the radicals R1 to R5 may stand for the optionally substituted monohalophenyl radical, (ii) R2 and R3 and/or R4 and R5 may, together with the adjoining N atom, stand for a heterocyclic radical with a 5-6 membered ring, and (iii) R2 may be a radical of the formula:- <FORM:1098687/A1-A3/2> wherein X1 is an alkylene radical optionally interrupted by O, S, or N, and R2 and R3 together may be a radical of the formula:- <FORM:1098687/A1-A3/3> wherein X2 and X3 are alklene radicals. The guanidine compound may be used in the form of the free base or a salt thereof, or in the form of a composition together with a liquid and/or inert solid diluent or carrier, optionally containing a surface active agent. The liquid diluent may be, or may include, water. An example describes the impregnation of wheat seeds with compositions containing a guanidine compound according to the invention and compares their repellent effect on birds with that of seeds similarly treated with tertamethyl thiuram disulphide or alternatively with anthraquinone.ALSO:Compositions for repelling birds, rodents, and leporine animals contain, as active ingredient, a guanidine of the formula <FORM:1098687/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 to R5 each stand for hydrogen, a monohalophenyl radical optionally substituted by halogen and/or by a C1-4 haloalkyl radical, a cycloalkyl radical or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical optionally substituted by an aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylmercapto, arylmercapto, carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide, hydroxyl, mercapto, cyano and/or carboxyl radical, but (i) only one of the radicals R1 to R5 may stand for the optionally substituted monohalophenyl radical, (ii) R2 and R3 and/or R4 and R5 may, together with the respective adjoining N atom, stand for a heterocyclic radical having a 5-6 membered ring, and (iii) R2 may be a radical of the formula <FORM:1098687/A5-A6/2> wherein X1 is an alkylene radical optionally interrupted by O, S, or N, and R2 and R3 together may stand for a radical of the formula <FORM:1098687/A5-A6/3> wherein X2 and X3 are alklene radicals. The guanidine may be in the form of the free base or a salt thereof. The compositions also additionally contain a solid or liquid diluent or carrier and may be formulated as solutions, suspensions, emulsions, pastes, powders or granulates together with conventional excipients, e.g. surface active agents. They may be applied to plants, soil, rooms, and materials, e.g. wood, paper or rubber, in conventional manner.
