The invention comprises compounds of formula and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, wherein R 1 is 2-, 3- or 4-pyridyl, 3- or 4-methoxyphenyl, 3- or 4-chlorophenyl, or 3- or 4-tolyl; R 2 is Et, Pr or Me 2 CH substituted by an Me 2 N, Et 2 N, piperidino, N-methylpiperazino, N - (2 - Me 2 NC 2 H 4 -)-piperazino or N-(3-Me 2 NC 3 H 6 -)-piperazino; R 3 is H or Me; R 4 is H, Cl or piperidinomethyl; and R 5 is H, or when R 3 is H and R 4 is not Cl, R 5 may be H or MeO. These compounds are prepared by reacting either the alkali metal salt of A-CH 2 - NH-R 1 with R 2 Cl or R 2 Br, or A-CH 2 Cl with NHR 1 R 2 , A being the benzofuran residue shown. Antitussive and antihistaminic compositions for oral or parenteral administration comprise the above compounds with pharmaceutical carriers.
