Summary:1 - Hydroxy - 4 - (8 - sulpho - b - naphthylazo) - 2 - (2 - octadecyloxy - 5 - sulpho) naphthanilide is prepared by diazotizing 2-naphthylamino-8-sulphonic acid and reacting it with the triethylamine salt of 1-hydroxy-2-(2-octadecyloxy-5-sulpho) naphthanilide and then acidifying with hydrochloric acid. Compounds of the formula <FORM:1091984/C4-C5/1> in which R is C12H35 and (SO3M)n are 6-SO3H C18H37 and 1-SO3H C18H37 (SO3M)m 4,8-SO3H C10H21 7-SO3H C12H25 3,6-SO3H C18H37 5-SO3H C18H37 6,8-SO3H are prepared in a similar manner from appropriately substituted starting materials.
