In a process of preparing an aromatic N-substituted amine an aromatic compound is reacted with an N-mono- or N-di-alkyl-chloramine or such a compound in which the alkyl groups together form a ring in a reaction medium containing a strong acid having a pK a <2 in the presence of a cuprous, ferrous or titanous reducing compound. Suitable reaction media include mixtures of sulphuric and acetic acids, sulphuric acid and methanol or trifluoroacetic acid. Among the products produced in examples are N,N- dimethylaniline, N - phenylpiperidine, 5-dimethylamino-8-methoxy-quinoline, 5-bromo-1- dimethyl - amino - naphthalene, N-butylaniline piperidine-anisole and piperidine-benzylamine.
