Summary: | Butadiene is polymerized using an alkali metal catalyst in the presence of an ether to form a polymer having a molecular weight of 250 to 2,500, recovering the polybutadene and treating it with an epoxidizing agent. Dioxane is the specified ether. The catalyst, preferably sodium, may be dispersed in an inert organic medium, e.g. kerosene. Specified epoxidizing agents are peracids, e.g. performic, perpropionic and perbutyric acid which may be formed in situ by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the corresponding acid or anhydride used with an acid catalyst. The metal catalyst may be destroyed at the end of the polymerization and the epoxidization may take place in the presence of an organic solvent, e.g. benzene and toluene. The epoxidized polymer may be cured by reacting with a compound containing more than one active hydrogen atom, e.g. a polyamine, a polybasic acid or anhydride, a polyol, a polymercaptan or a polyphenol. |
