Summary:A water-soluble derivative of a tetracycline is prepared by treating an aqueous suspension of a tetracycline with formaldehyde at a pH value between 5 and 9. The tetracycline may be tetracycline itself, chlorotetracycline, oxytetracycline or demethylchlorotetracycline. The formaldehyde may be added in aqueous solution, in gaseous form or as paraldehyde, and the soluble product may be separated by lyophilization or by precipitation with a mixture of water-miscible organic solvents.
