Summary:Fibre reinforced elastomeric articles are made by applying to a substantially saturated hydrocarbon elastomer, fibres of a highly crystalline, linear, high molecular weight polymer of an alpha-olefin of the formula CH2=CHR where R is an alkyl group, mixed with one or more polymerizable hydrocarbons which contain at least one ethylenic double bond in the molecule and an activator acting with a free radical mechanism and heat-curing the fibre-reinforced elastomer to unite and cross-link the components of the article. The hydrocarbon elastomer may be natural rubber, polybutadiene, butyl rubber, or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. The preferred polymer of an alphaolefin is polypropylene. The fibres may be in the form of fabrics or cords. The articles are preferably made by applying a solution of all p the ingredients to a fabric. The fibres may be peroxidized after spinning. The monomer used is preferably divinyl benzene in admixture with ethylvinylbenzene. The exemplified activators are dicumyl peroxide, and tert. butyl perbenzoate. The mixture to be cross-linked may also contain carbon black, and a plasticizer such as an unsaturated hydrocarbon obtained from acid petroleum sludge.
