Summary:Materials other than leather are waterproofed by applying thereto a solution in an organic solvent of a condensation product of an alcoholate of a polyvalent metal, such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium or zirconium, and an acid alkyl derivative of a phosphorus acid. Materials treatable include plastics, painted surfaces, metals, ceramics and building materials. Suitable alcoholates are those derived from isopropyl, butyl, octyl, dodecyl or other preferably low molecular weight alcohols or alcohols having halogen or other substituents. Suitable phosphorus acids are phosphoric acid, phosphonic acids and phosphinic acids, and the alkyl substituents thereof contain at least six carbon atoms and include alkyl groups substituted with aryl or other groups or interrupted by hetero atoms or hetero atom groups. Examples of suitable phosphorus acid compounds are the acid mono- or di-octyl, dodecyl, oleyl, alkylphenol, and abietyl esters of phosphoric acid, and acid phosphoric acid alkyl amides. Condensation is effected by bringing together if necessary with heating to 30-50 DEG C., solutions of the alcoholate and the phosphorus acid derivative in isopropanol, trichlorethylene, toluene or other low molecular weight alcohols, aliphatic halogen hydrocarbons, or aromatic hydrocarbons. The solutions may contain as stabilizers hydroxycarboxylic acid esters, products with reactive methylene groups, hydroxy-oxo compounds, oximes, and compounds having an aci form such as acetyl acetone and acetoacetic ester. The materials to be proofed may be treated, as by dipping, brushing on or spraying, with 0.5-5%, preferably 2-3% solutions of the condensates, or of the components, with subsequent heating if necessary, or with solutions of the condensates in animal or mineral oils, fats or waxes made by distilling off the original solvents and re-dissolving. The treating solutions may contain mineral or synthetic waxes. Specification 826,065 is referred to.ALSO:Solutions used in waterproofing comprise condensation products of an alcoholate of a polyvalent metal such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium or zirconium, and an acid alkyl (including oleyl, alkylphenyl, -naphthenyl and -abietyl) derivative of a phosphorus acid. Suitable alcoholates are those derived from isopropyl, butyl, octyl, dodecyl or other preferably low molecular weight alcohols or alcohols having halogen or other substituents. Suitable phosphorus acids are phosphoric acid, alkyl phosphonic acids and alkyl phosphinic acids, and the alkoxy groups present should contain at least six carbon atoms or the alcohol residue may be substituted with other groups or interrupted by hetero atoms or hetero atom groups. Examples of suitable phosphorus acid compounds are the acid mono- or di-octyl, dodecyl, oleyl, alkylphenol, naphthenyl and abietyl esters of phosphoric acid, and acid phosphoric acid alkyl amides.
