Summary: | 1407416 Copolymerization of mono-olefins and conjugated diolefins SNAMPROGETTI SpA 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54525/72 Heading C3P A system of monomers each containing at least 4 carbon atoms and consisting of one or more monolefins and one or more conjugated diolefins is copolymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) a compound of the formula AlR 3 or AlR 2 X where X is halogen and R is a C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon radical and (b) an organic compound of the formula wherein a C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon group, hydrogen or a labile halogen atom, X is a labile halogen atom, Z is C, N or P, Y is an electron withdrawing group rendering the halogen atom or atoms sufficiently labile to be removed from the organic compound by an electrophile, Y1 is a C 1 - C 10 hydrocarbon group, hydrogen or Y, one group R1, Y or Y1 optionally being a bivalent radical connected through a double bond to Z, or Y and Y1 together with Z form a cyclic structure (optionally substituted by labile halogen atoms) which has an electron withdrawing effect on X or on X and R1 when R is a labile halogen atom and n and h are 0 or 1. Many suitable (b) compounds are listed. The mono-olefin may be isobutene, methylbutene or methylpentene. The diolefin may be isoprene, butadiene or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene. In the examples isobutene and isoprene are copolymerized in methyl chloride using AlEt 2 Cl, AlEt 2 Br, AlEt 2 I or Al(isoBu) 2 Cl and one of 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobenzoquinone, N,N-dichlorobenzenesulphonamide, picrylchloride or N- bromo (or chloro) succinimide and the polymerization is terminated by the addition of methanol. The product butyl rubber is vulcanized. The Specification refers to 1,407,414. |
