Summary: | 1414193 Sorbic acid HOECHST AG 29 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971 22 July 1972 (2) 25 Aug 1972] 60045/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Sorbic acid is prepared from a "polyester" of formula using a catalyst mixture of a palladium compound or complex and a tertiary phosphine. The polyester is formed from ketene and crotonaldehyde in situ. Palladium salts such as chloride or acetate or complexes with benzonitrile, acetonylacetonate, bis-(pyridine) and bis-(aniline) palladium chlorides, or with ionexchangers or zeolites, and bis-(triphenylphosphine)-palladium chloride. The second component of the system may be a trialiphatic or aromatic phosphine, e.g. tributyl or triphenyl phosphine. The catalyst may be formed in situ, and inert solvents may be present during the reaction at up to 140 C. Examples are described using palladium chloride acetate, bis-anilinepalladium chloride, benzonitrile-palladium chloride, bis-(triphenylphosphine)-palladium chloride, with triphenyl phosphine of varying concentrations and in solvents such as toluene, toluene and acetic acid, and xylene. |
