Summary:1393912 Cutting by fusion UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 26 July 1972 [13 Sept 1971 15 Sept 1971] 35018/72 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions F4 and C5] The gas stream of a metal cutting torch is formed by reacting a solid fuel 13 with oxygen to form an oxygen-rich central portion surrounded by a fuel-rich outer portion. The torch includes a cartridge 2 releasably held by a latch 5 against a biasing spring in a tubular holder 3 which has an insulated portion or a handle 4 with a protective shield 51. The holder 3 is provided with dimples 27 to space the cartridge 2 from its inner wall. The cartridge 2 comprises a casing 8 enclosing insulators 11, 12, a hollow solid fuel element 13, e.g. polymethylmethacrylate, and an oxygen generating material 14 formed of two solid segments (14a, 14b) (Fig. 3, not shown), of a composition comprising chlorate or perchlorate and iron or magnesium compacted with fibreglass or asbestos, e.g. 86À5% NaClO 3 , 12À5% Fe and 1% fibreglass. Ignitable sections 18 are mounted between the segments (14a, 14b) which are held together by a glue formed of igniter material (19). In use, a cap 23 is removed from a metal nozzle 9 of the torch and the oxygen generating material 14 ignited by an igniter 15 which is actuated by a pull cord 24. The gas stream produced by the reaction of the fuel 13 with the oxygen may have a temperature of 1760‹ C., a burn time of 3 minutes and at least a sonic velocity. The speed of ignition of the fuel 13 may be increased by an ignitable material 18a. An increase in gas pressure within the cartridge 2 is prevented by a pressure relief valve 10. The hot spent cartridge 2 is prevented from rolling along a surface on which it is placed by an arm 25.
