Summary:1375166 Venting device REYROLLE BELMOS Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 55331/70 Heading A5A A device to be inserted into the wall of a flame proof enclosure for venting purposes comprises an assembly of stacked annular plates 10 each having radially extending troughs 12 which constitute passages extending from the bore of the assembly formed by the openings 11 in the plates, and the end of the bore remote from the enclosure being closed such that air may be drawn into the bore from the enclosure and dispersed down the radial passages, or vice versa. A blower and motor unit 24 may be positioned adjacent the venting device to provide an induced draught into or out of the enclosure. The dimensions of the passages formed by the troughs 12 are critical in preventing the escape of a spark, and vary according to different atmospheres within the enclosure. In Figs. 1-4 the flameproof outlet ventilator consists of an assembly of circular plates 10 with central bore 11, each plate being formed with radial slots 12 on each face so as to provide central webs 13 between triangular areas 14. Each area 14 contains bolt hole 15. The assembly is clamped between solid end plate 16 and stepped bush mounting flange 17 by screws 17a which engage in blind, tapped bosses 17b in plate 16, and is bolted to the outside of a flameproof enclosure wall 19 around opening 18 by screws 20 which pass through holes 21 in plate 16, holes 15 in plates 10 and holes 22 in flange 17. Metal shield 23 surrounding the assembly is welded to the outside of wall 19. Motor and fan unit 24 is mounted round opening 18 inside the enclosure and communicates with the interior thereof. In operation, air from the enclosure is vented axially through bore 11, radially through the slots in plates 10, and then axially through shield 23 to atmosphere. In the Fig. 5 modification a glass window is set in an opening in the end plate for viewing a lamp which indicates whether the fan is operating, and in the Fig. 6 modification the vent assembly is used as a breather, to balance the pressure between the inside and the outside of the enclosure. The apparatus is applicable to enclosures for electrical control gear, particularly an electrical contacter starter.
